can't wait to see your pics! Thank you for commenting on my Camp Pieri post. I believe that post has gotten the most hits.

I was with HQ Battery, 3/32nd FA. My husband, Wayne, was assigned to the 527th MP Co. whose barracks were on Camp Pieri.

Hello, I was at Camp Pieri from 4/1955 to 10/1956. I was with Battery C, 5 AAA Batalion. At that time there was no development around the camp. An enlisted person house was across the road. An athletic field was up a road directly across from the camp gate. Played basketball in the auditorium and came within 1 point of going to the European Tourney.

Many more memories!!!

WOW! Camp Pieri ... I was there in '85 and '86 at 1/333 FA Lance. I have a lot of mixed memories, but unfortunately spent most of my time there completely drunk. Anybody recall the Gasthaus just down the street toward Dotzheim, its back yard was right near the motor pool for the ADA unit and they often had deer in their backyard which of course because somebody's dinner! :)

Whil I was there Ed Pimental was shot in the head by a RAF (Red Army Faction) terrorist and they used his ID to get a car bomb onto Rhein Mein Airbase BOOM! ... I still remember standing in formation all morning because they couldn't ID Ed, his face was completely blown off ... another bomb took off the front of the Heinerburg PX, a lot of crazy stuff happened back then ... however we did get the chance to go to NAMFI on the island of Crete to file a missile into the Mediterranean Sea ... that was interesting (Stay away from the Ouzo).

Anyway, a lot of memories for which I am thankful and sometimes distressed. Sometimes I wish I could go back and relive those days, and sometimes I don't want to remember.

Anyway, thanks for the site and the photos!

It was a great time and sad to see its been torn down and made into apartments. The summer of 85 was great....I will always have great memories of Camp Pieri. Corder

I was stationed at Camp Pieri from Dec 88- May 92 at 14th Maintenance Company, One of your photos, Anybody know what you're looking at?, is 14th's motor pool buildings. From right to left is the Service and Recovery and Engineers shops. To the left and not in the picture is the ammo dump ( fenced and bunkered) which was patrolled by a roaming guard that checked in every half hour. And up from there is 14th barracks. Next door to the Post and going down hill towards Wiesbaden is the German hospital.

I say Camp Pieri survivor because I spent a lot of time at the Hilltop, as well as downtown at the Western, Big Ben's and the Rock and Roll club which I can't remember.

During Desert Shield/Storm did a lot of guard duty in Hainerburg Housing area, the PX area in Wiesbaden, the Amelia Earhart hotel and Camp Pieri. The only winter I ever saw it snow in Germany, I was patrolling Camp Pieri with a 20-30 lb radio on my back walking in 6-10 inches of snow.

" The Towers" at Camp Pieri had Air Raid sirens at the top. I know this because one night it was storming pretty good and I don't know if it was thunder or lightning, but it set of those sirens for what seemed hours....very little sleep that night.

I remember a humvee got hung up on the barrier at the front gate once. I remember me and a group of buddys stumbled back to Pieri one night..morning from the club at Lindsay Air Station and instead of walking the rest of the way up that hill, around the corner and back down to the front gates, we just scaled the fence at the ammo dump and 14th. I remember PT runs through the vineyards across the street from Pieri as well as down hill towards the river and back up by the hospital or visa versa.

In the fall/winter of 91 at met my now wife at 14th. I was discharged in May of 92. Spent 3 months stateside with family I hadn't seen in nearly 5 years. With my last military check, bought an engagement ring and a one way ticket to Frankfurt. Proposed ( she said yes...whew.) That was nearly 16 years ago.

Good times.

I was at Camp Pieri from '88-'90 as a 29E in the 14th. Spent a lot of time at The Hilltop when I wasn't in town at Old Daddy's Saloon.

Horrible establishment.

When I first got to Weisbaden, some of my friends and I got bicycles and rode down the Rhine to Rudesheim. Just as we got there, one of the guys was trying to do a wheelie and pulled handlebars right off of his bike. We were next to a campground and started asking for a wrench in english. We spoke almost no German but we found a nice English couple who had no idea what a wrench was. After describing that we needed to tighten a nut onto a bolt, the couple finally deduced that what we needed was a spanner. We got the bike fixed and traveled on. Of course we drank so much on the way to Rudesheim that we couldn't make it back. We tried to board the train with our bikes but were stopped by a very angry conductor. When he realized that we were not only drunk but didn't speak the language, he showed us where to put our bikes and we rode back to Camp Pieri.

Oh, and there was the time that a Spc4 was going out to guard the ammo dump and accidentally discharged his M16 up the stairs by the CQ in the 14th's barracks. No one was hurt but he did LOTS of extra duty.

I have some great memories of my time there. Thanks for the site.

Hello Everyone, I was stationed in 563rd Camp pieri from 1974 to 1979. I use to work for Tech Supply and my platoon Sgt was SFC Alvarez, SFC White and many more. As Flip73 stated I ws also under the command of Major Pope. I knew the brothers big Will, baby Bra and Cisco. My name is Siino, was an E-5 and got selected for Warrant and transferred out to USA but decided to get out in 81. Still live in Germany and work for Bank of America community Bank. Wow those were the days when we played spades and got drunk. Great times in Camp Pieri. Today it is a German housing area they built Condo's and turn the place into a nice resident. Once in awhile I am in the area and just stop in to listen to the Army noise in my memories.
Take Care all !

I was at Camp Pieri from 90-92. C Battery 3/32. Myself and another female soldier showing up to be assigned to line units caused quite a ruckus. Had great times at Camp Pieri, everyone was pretty close there as the post was very small. Your pictures bring back many memories; especially running Monday morning P.T. through those vineyards and hills. Right-arm Night at the Hilltop that also had late night schnitzels and pomme frites to help those hangover blues. I remember that as draw down came to a close we were sent to Amelia Earhart at Lindsey Airbase to live until our Port-of-calls came in. How could I forget that early morning earthquake in Wiesaden! Great times. Will never ever forget Camp Pieri. Hope to return to Germany soon.

Was with the 5/77 FA when they converted to 1/333 in 1973, then I was transferred to Giessen. I seem to remember a lot of problems at Pieri while acting as OG and SDO especially on pay days...good and bad memories.
I did love the surrounding area, Rheinblick and cant remember the name of the gasthaus on the hill overlooking the Rhine. Great prices on stereos at Mainz-Kastel. Lived in the American Arms. Long time ago...

My name is David Moore. I served in A battery 1/333 in 85 and 86 in A&T Platoon. I remember Mark Brodessor well(he was my roomate), as well as John Ginge, Jay Millar, Lt Ken Boes, Mark Perry, Jose Pulido, Sgt Rodriguez, Sgt Stallings and the infamous sgt Ed Campbell. I'm sure I've forgotten alot of other names of my friends there but had a great time. I was in Wiesbaden in Feb 07 visiting my 19 year old daughter that I had with a german girl. The whole place looks completely different. No more fence and gate. Only the four barracks stand and they've been converted into apartment housing. Went there with my ex german girlfreind. We also tried to find the Western and Big Ben's. She took me where they were but there are no recognizable remnants left. Drank alot of Bitburger pills and ate alot of jagersnitschel when I was there. It brought back alot of fond memeories. My email is dmoore373@gmail.com

Camp Pieri,
1992-1993

I loved that place, I was there when it was deactivated as a part of the 14th Maint company. The Recreation Center and the Hilltop were awesome hang outs on base. I worked in the warehouse as a stock control clerk and lived in the barracks, it was the most fun I've had in my life to date. Got there mid December 1991 and didn't report to work for three weeks, me and my roomate were PFCs and we didn't know what to do or where to go, so we hung out and learned from the best on how to party.
From every club and hangout in Wiesbaden, Mainz, Frankfurt, Darmstadt and other surrounding cities, let's just I been there and got the t-shirt. Oh, so many memories about that place, someone mentioned PT/Training in the vineyards, yep I remember. After the deactivation, some of us soldiers were later reassigned to 77th Maint Detachment and set up shop on Lee Barracks which was desolate except for the bowling alley and then later the Wiesbaden Army AirField which was final. I rode by Camp Pieri a few times after the deactivation and the Germans fixed it up and the same with Lindsey Air Station. Well I could go on and on about my times in the lovely city of Wiesbaden but for us that have been there we know.

Hi, thanks for the pics. Brings back lots of good memories. I was with B Btry 1/333 from 12/75 through 6/78. Have pretty much lost track of everybody but "Dutch" Padgett in Texas. Our CO was Cpt Crawford when I got there, forget the name of the guy that took over in '76. XO was big old Kelly Cook from Kansas who played football for the Weisbaden Flyers for a while. I was theodolite operator, radio operator, platoon leader's driver for most of my time - Lt. Mrak at first then Lt. Hogan. SFC. Pierce was our platoon sgt, SSgt. Roland our section leader. Cpl Rigo, Lane from S. Florida, "Flipper" from Ohio, "Eagle Beak" Rothenberg from Maryland (I think), Romage, Romstad from Montana, Cadden from Georgia, Ramsey from N.C., "Shorty" Smith, and many others. I worked TDY in the auto shop for a couple of months - the guy that ran it looked like James Brown the soul singer. Spent time at the Platz Club until I found someplace better to hang out.

What a good way to bring back memories. I was at the 563rd from November 76 to June 80. OH those were the days. Sgt. Rock having those flash backs in the clubs. Summers in the park downtown. I even know Robert Siino. I try to get back To Wiesbaden every four or five years. It's changed but like someone said, you can feel the memories. Shouts going out to Harvey Barnett, Daryl Bohomme, Butter Milk, Vicki Wilkerson, Raymond, Sgt. Blackmond, Sgt. Siino, SFC Stokes, Simmons, short guy from Chi-town, Stuckey. 3am alerts. No matter what they turn that barracks into, it's still Camp Pieri......

Hi I met my husband 1983 when he was stationed at Camp Pieri. He was stationed there from Sep. 83-March 85 with the 527th MP Co. I was a young German girl living in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim, near the air base, when we met. In 1985 I went to San Antonio, Texas, where my husband was stationed at Fort Sam Houston and we were married. After getting married we went back to Germany and were stationed in Heidelberg, 529th MP Co., where our first son was born. In “89” we left the military and came to Michigan and in “92” we had our second son. My husband is named Bob Price and my name is Elly Price, formerly Elly Bürger. My husband is currently a police officer, getting close to retirement and I work as a dog handler/trainer. We both have good memories of Camp Pieri and Wiesbaden in those days, (Western Saloon, Old Daddys, Big Bens) to name a few of the hangouts. It’s hard to believe it was that long ago. I told my husband about this sight and he said he has photos of Camp Pieri taken during the time he was stationed there.
Best regards Elly Price

Hi Jesse ---

I was also at Camp Pieri, about 20 years before you arrived, when it was home to the 5th Bn 77th Field Artillery (Sergeant Missile). I was in the Ordnance platoon of HQ Btry. The Sergeant was being phased out when I left in July of 1973. HQ Btry was in the building immediately to the left of the gate. Most of the HQ troops lived on the 2nd and 3rd floors, but my roomie and I had one of the two small 2-man rooms on the top floor, away from the "zoo".

What a great place to spend a couple of years! I can't say that I miss the Army too much, but I certainly miss the good time I had at Pieri, Wiesbaden and Mainz! I still get a headache just thinking about the day after the Fasching Parade in Mainz in 1972. Hard to believe one person can drink that much wine and survive.

I have a number of picture of Camp Pieri from my time there and will be happy to send them to you if you want to include them on the site. Just let me know.

Take care,
Bob Gilbert (formerly Sp5 Gilbert)

Hi All, Just typed in Camp Pieri on Google to show some pic's of the base to my son. I was stationed with 563d Ord Co from May 76 to Jun 82, had a great time. Worked in Tech Supply than at the TOW Dragon section. Stayed in trouble some time, but had some good leaders who could see I had some leadership ability and my career took off from that point on. I retired as a SGM with 30 years of service, and I know alot of people would never have dreamed that could happen. Good people like CPT Taylor, SFC Bozeman, 1SG Evans meant a lot. I remember Sgt Siino and others who have posted. I will try to dig up some of the old photos and post them. Take care everyone

The thing I remember most about Camp Pieri was the incredible view I had from my 14th Maint. barracks room window. I never got tired of looking out of it, the infamous shoe tree and the eye sore of the ammo storage unit notwithstanding. One of my favorite activities was to try to identify distant objects that I found on an area map and then later go there if I could. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures that survived my several moves since my stay between June 1988 to November 1991.

While my happiest memories of Germany lay beyond the arm's throw confines of Camp Pieri, several people with whom I worked and associated I remember fondly. A short list includes Chief Hasselstrom, Tim Grove, Jim Kidwell, Keith Campbell, Dickson, SFC McLean, Mike Mills, Les Eisenbarth, Patricia Miller, Mary "Marty" Hooker, Jay Lauer nee Nelson, Chris Webb, Andre Brown, Joe Williams, Ron Lee, Cleese Puppy, Johnny Cornell, Dean Rhodes, and Chip Schaefer, among others. There was also that gate guard whose name escapes me. He had curly hair, spoke perfect English and made me laugh every time I passed through the gate on his watch.
On the other hand, there are those who are remembered rather less affectionately, to wit, SFC Lindsay, SFC Morris, SGT Miller, SSG Sherfield, SGT White, SGT Schmalhorst, Chief Aipperspach, Al Dulles, Ray Laurent. Deserving mention in this category would be my last roommate, Rod. In fairness, he wasn't truly a bad guy, but he and alcohol were definitely not a match made in Heaven. Chief Hasselstrom told me that he sobered up after he left the Army, however.
I hope that I left enough clues in this post to readily identify myself for those who knew me. Whether you liked or disliked me, you're welcome to contact me at bfaling -at- mises dot com.

I was at the 563rd from 1982 to 1986 I worked as the Vulcan section chief and than worked as the LAD Plt maint sup, Camp Pieri was one of my best assignments in my 20 years in the Army, I worked with many great technicians and worked with (WO)Don Tashner and worked for one of the best 1SG's Charlie Evans (SM), I really enjoyed the Reine river area as there was always something to do around there, especially the wine fest downtown. I think one of my worst times while in the Army was the day Spc Edward Pimental was found murdered. I will never forget the day I reported him missing and having to go to the orderly room to find out that he had been murdered and than to find out that he was murdered for his ID card to set off a car bomb at Reine Main AFB a day later. They say time heals all wounds but that wound has never healed. I will never forget him. I also miss the summers spent at NAMFI Crete Greece running the range and spending the summers on the beach performing the mission (tough assignment)for Range/maint NCOIC for the USAEUR missile firings for CHAP, Stinger and Redeye. Anyone who was at 563rd. during that time contact me. (jafoftn@msn.com)And by the way Jesse great blog.

I was at 14th Maintenance Company from '88 to '91 as a soldier but stuck around as a dependant until '92.
"Sundog" I think the guy that did the accidental fire up the stairwell was named Eric... I remember quite a bit of the Hill Top, Western, Old Daddy's, Big Ben, the Palm Beach in Mainz, and the little Greek bar down the hill. I hung out with a lot of guys from 333 (David Scantlin, Scott Ward, and Robbie Sharber) and from the 563rd (Jim Stringfellow and his Buddy Mike).
I miss the place. My kids left here yesterday on a flight to Germany..I met my ex-husband on Camp Pieri and he is now stationed over there with his new wife. Our oldest two children were born there, one in Frankfurt the other in Wiesbaden, and this will be the first time my daughter (our second) has been back to Germany since she was 15 months old ('92). She is now 18..

I will have to post some pictures for yall when I get home..

Robbie's family and my family have actually spent a lot of time hanging out but they moved back to Florida..I haven't been in contact with too many others... I miss that place and I miss my friends..
My time there, the lessons I learned, and the people I knew helped to mold me into the person I am today...

I was stationed at Wiesbaden AB when it was closed and turned over to the Army. It was weired seeing tanks rolling on the streets and the Wing HQ building being turned into barracks. We moved the entire personnel function, which was a detachment of the 601st at Sembach, over to Lindsay AS. The Army also took over base housing, meaning Hainerberg too. Funny thing about our housing inspection as we were rotating: Worked hard cleaning for an Air Force "white glove" type inspection of our quarters; Army guy showed up, did a "walk through" and after asking us if we wanted it, walked out with all the china that went with the house. We just shook our heads.

Hello to everyone!
Well, to start, my name is Matthew Rall and I was stationed at Camp Pieri from April 1990 to 1991'ish...lol. I was with the Lance Missile System, C-Battery 3/32 F.A.
It was the most incredible time that I have ever had while serving active duty in the Army. I loved it there, and when the drawdown began, and the Lance Missile was deactivated, well, it was devistating. I remember watching, and video taping, a specialized unit that came in to basically 'destroy' our equipment. They were very methodical about it, and it was quite sad to say the least. I remember playing pool onenight, against the post Command Sgt. Major, beating him, only to be beat by his son right afterwards. I miss the runs in the mornings, through the countryside and the vinyards that surrounded the area. I miss going to the Walkplatz in downtown Wiesbaden, hitting the clubs and pubs that were around. I truly enjoyed the wine fests and the bier fests too!! What an amazing time it was! I remember pulling guard duty at the front gate as well. Oh, what fun. haha
SOOOO many stories in that short period of time, and what a time it was. Lots of local gals, just gorgeous...hehe. Tons of castles to explore as well, all along the Rhein river. I purchased a vehicle shortly after my arrival, and was able to really take advantage of being in Germany, includind the autobahn, lol.
I could go on and on...and would really love to find some of the folks that I was stationed there with during that time. Hope this works!
Thanks for the blog!!

Hope to hear from SOMEONE...lol

Hi Jesse,

My Name is Ben Davis. I was stationed at Camp Pieri with the 563rd Ordinance Company from 1973 to 1976. My MOS was 23H20 (if my memory serves me correctly). That is, I repaired the guidance system to the Shillelagh missile system. This was an IR guided system launched from the M551 tank.

My crew Chief was Ronald Nishibun who hailed from Hawaii. I have found out since I left that he seems to have married a German national and has settled somewhere in the east side of America somewhere. He has two sons who appear to be doing okay for themselves. One appears to be an accomplished vocalist.

Mr. Nishibun (Nish) was very knowledgeable of this system and I learned much from him. I venture to say he played a very important role in our mission in that his knowledge or understanding of the system was very through.

The following are others I remember:

Huey Parks, David & Renee Carter, Captain Palmer, Carl Brown (who did not like me), Karl & Linda Portze, Larry Lehman, David Posse (who was absolutely infatuated with his new wife), Tyrone Washington, Terry Neville, and many others. I will need to look at my pictures to find out the others. My memory is not what it use to be.

When I was stationed there I was married and my wife and two of my four children where there with me (others did not exist). We lived on the "economy" for the first 2 years we were there. We first lived at 16 Nettelbeck Strasse and then on Aschenbrodelweg. The later was only about 2 or 3 blocks north of Camp Pieri.

I remember that the 333rd Artillery was across the street from us. Also, the chow hall was behind us. Sergeant Fisher has my deepest respect. He was the one who encouraged me to do more than what I ever hoped I could accomplish.

I do not quite remember the 14th Maintenance Company but it does sound familiar. I need to go but I will try to get back with more memories. Thank You.

BT Davis

Freezing my butt off in the field, and coming home to Brewski's and a loving company. I was also incharge of the Drill Team that won the BN Org Day, I was the Short Little CPl. Well to anyone on the drill team, can remember we showed out up in Giessen, and I still have that VHS, if anyone would like a copy or just get intouch.

Wow I was veiwing the pic of Camp Pieri tooken in the 50's the base really didnt change alot when I arrived there in the summer of 89. What I see missing though is the Gashous that was next door to the Camp. Which if I might add had a damn good cook. I also notice that the space that was our motor pool is occupied. I remmember when we would go too the motor pool and PMCS on our vehicles and my 2 1/2 was positioned right by the fence that neighbored the Gashous and from time to time I used to feed the deer some of my MRE rats. Thank you for the memories.

Man this brings back some memories. I was just on the phone with an old Camp Pieri friend (Bud Pagakis) and we talked about some of the good times we had at the 563rd.
I was stationed at Camp Pieri from around 1978-1992 and work on the LCSS systems. First Sergeant Evans was the best. I'll never forget the trips to Crete to support the Lance firings as a PDK team member.

I retired from the Army as a CW3 (I know Maj. Baker probably can't believe that) and I now work for a little company called Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas,

Hello,
I was part of the original 563rd that was formed at Redstone Arsenal and arrived at Camp Pieri in 1970. I as there until October 1971. We originally moved into the barracks on the left (as you enter the gate). When the 5/77th arrived a few months later we had to move across to the barracks on the right. The place was a dump when we got there. It looked like it hadn't been occupied since Adolf and the boys built it before the war. As I recall we raised enough of a stink that some Top Brass came and inspected the place. Within a month or so it got some paint and new plumbing, and was made livable. All you guys that came later can thank us for that.
It was great duty there. It was like having an eight to five job. Then go to the Rod and Gun Club or the Gasthaus just down the road. Or maybe go to the NCO Club at Lindsey Air Station.
The only bad thing that went on is when some Black Panther wannabe's in the 5/77th tried to burn down the barracks. They burned out part of the roof and top floor. They caught one guy running down the hallway with a waste can full of gasoline. Also, engineering tape going from gas tank to gas tank on a bunch of vehicles in the motor pool. Someone had tried to light it off, but it went out before any damage happened. From that night on we had to pull guard duty. That sucked.
I was surprised to hear that the 563rd was still there until the post was shut down.

SP5 Daniel Root 1/333 FA 75-79 –While at Camp Pieri I was assigned to Bn S-3 and FDC, with the additional duty as Unit Drug and Alcohol Education Specialist. I lived off post, and spent a lot of my spare time taking college classes. Since I worked most of the time at Bn HQ S-3, and didn’t socialize much with the boys in the barracks, most of my memories centered on Camp Pieri are of co-workers and fellow students. The group includes, SSG Steven A. McClain, SSG Santiago S. Arrona, MSG Smalley, CPT Ron Wilkerson, 1LT Frank Mrak, CPT Ed Gaunt, CPT Chet Wingate, SP5 Robert W. “POP” Dawes, foosball king RG Mujica, and Ron Williams. I wouldn’t mind finding out what happened to these men. I understand Chet is in Charlotte NC, and owns a couple of businesses. Ed Gaunt promoted to Captain just prior to his departure. As I recall, he received a scholarship to study Math at Old Dominion. Ron Williams got certified as a school administrator in West Virginia. My buddy James E. Steel was the Chaplain’s assistant who encouraged me to get back in school. He completed medical school, and served later as a flight surgeon in the USAF – F-14 squadron, outside of London as I recall. I particularly enjoyed touring the Rhine River area. Got down to Switzerland and over to Paris several times, as well as duty in Crete for a launch. Steak sandwiches at the golf course, dinners at the “SPLIT” downtown. The PT was nice, jogging the local area. Taking the “mountain training” with the unit down in Garmisch or Berchtesgarten, was a real sweet deal too. Kudos to the brass for dreaming that one up! I completed two undergraduate degrees while I was there, and worked with many great people.
It’s funny – I spent a total of eight years wearing green, and to this day I have dreams (nightmares?) which involve solving problems associated with military service. The other night I reported for duty at Camp Pieri, after being gone for forty years. My new CO, a young captain, assigned me to personnel duty. Here I am forty years senior to him with more military service and education than most of the folks in the whole battalion, and I’m stuck updating 201 files (Some things never change, but a good soldier follows orders).

Dear Camp Pieri veterans,

I'm an independent filmmaker researching a film on the murder of Edward Pimental. I want to give an accurate picture of the day to day life of the soldiers stationed at the camp and I'm interested in hearing any stories about life there in the early 1980's, how people would have spent their time, what would have gone on inside and outside the camp, and if anyone has stories and memories of Edward Pimental.

If it would be possible to interview you by phone or email or if you would suggest talking with any fellow soldiers from the time please get in touch with me or pass on my email address

Hello, I was known as the Fried Piper and sometimes called BK by the bro's. Stationed at the 563rd Ord Co from 1975 till June 1976, Major Pope was the CO and Cpt Palmer the XO. Most of the names of people I served with have faded into darkness, like shadows at the edge of night. But I remember Goose, Chuck Banish, Ike, Woody from Florida, Pilpenko from New jersey, Big Will, Had my room on the first floor but then we moved across the lot and went to the third floor. Loved those early morning health and welfare inspections at 4:00AM. CQ runner banging on everyone's door warning that a storm was approaching. All the windows opening at once and it would rain hash, pipes and Mandrax from all the windows. Felt sorry for the senior NCO's, they couldnt keep track of where it was all coming from. One night we were parting hard and someone fell from the third story window to the ground. The CQ about shit when we told him about it but hell he survived the fall and the party continued. It was a great place to serve and so many good memories. Sneaking out the fence and heading downtown. Making a pipe with an apple right after breakfast and getting right for the day. But my wonderful military career came to an end. Four years, two article 15's and one field grade 15 (I think i buffed every damm floor in the camp after that 15). I was discharged, my enlistment was up. E-4, Honorable Discharge, fire guard ribbon and one Good Conduct Medal thanks to the company clerk who could write the CO's signature better than the CO himself. You should have seen the faces on those fools at Ft Dix NJ when I processed out. They kept scratching their head LOL. I wouldnt trade it for the world, so many great memories. The photos bring back a lot of memories, mostly good. I arrived at Camp Pieri August 1975 as a 19 year old boy from Southeast Louisiana and left FEbruary 1977.I was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 1/333 Field Artillery and worked as a repair parts clerk. I spent 3 winters there and never did get used to not seeing the sun shine for weeks at a time. Partied a lot but I also grew up and matured thanks to some of the supervisors I worked with including Sgt. Doss, Lt. Claunch, hard nosed Capt Wilkerson, and Sgt. Reed. These people gave me responsibilities and helped me to develop confidence. The life experiences still serve me to this day. I developed many friendships while there. I particularly remember my roommate Tomas(Shorty)Ramos who taught me to curse in Spanish LOL. Also Jon Olson, Joe Blurton, Michael Dupriest and a many others whose names I can't remember. From Redstone Arsenal to Mainz to The Hill at Pieri, 1971-72 as the 563rd Ord. Co. Moved into the first barrack on the right. Was empty then, we moved all the bunks & lockers in. Cut out the wood, drew & painted our co. logo placard which was hung on the door to the depo where I worked by the motor pool.
Lot of alcohol & hashish induced memories, almost all good. Good times at the Rod &Gun Club and Gasthaus down the road. Flew remote module planes, played softball and practiced archery in the field across the street Would piss off this ole farmer by using his hay bales as target practice. Good stereo deal at the Wiesbaden A.F. base "cave".Took a lot of pics but all slides. Some good days but still Army.

Was assigned to 14th Maintenance Company, Service & Recovery from 1986-1989. I really enjoyed my time here, and served with some great people in the Company. I was a 44E (Machinist), but worked in a lot of other supporting MOS fields in the section, such as Recovery (Thank you "Buck"), Welding, Glazier, and Canvas. I miss the soccer games behind our barracks, trips to Rudesheim, Koblenz, Remagen, Bonn, and Frankfurt. Got to go to the grenze(border)in Fulda & Hof, and see the "other side". Took the opportunity to visit other countries on the continent as well. Enjoyed going to the local bars/restaurants in Biebrich, Freudenburg, Dotzheim, Mainz and just blend in to the German culture. Thank you Jesse for setting up this blog.

563rd from 77-81. Anyone that has ever been stationed there realizes just how lucky we were. I got out the Army went to school for 2 years and decided to go back in in 1983. Became a military analyst and a Korean linquist and worked against the NPRK for 7 years. Got out for good in 1991 after a stint as an analyst with the 10th SF Group out of Fort Devens. Now living peacefully with wife in NM and working as a Manager of a production plant. Actually ran into B Milk in the 80s at Fort Lewis. Hung out with Stuckey, Daryl B., Jeff, Rick. Knew Paul C. Harvey Vicki W, Peggy, Mack. First boss in 563rd was Harry Gamache who ran the QSS section. Own a few timesshares so me and the wife travel around a lot. Plan to take her to see Wiesbaden and other parts of Europe for our 25th anniversary in the summer of 2011. Tony T. is the name, if you knew me then you know we had some good times.

Stationed at Camp Pieri Dec 1963 until Jan 1964 with Twilight Radio,2063 Comm Squadron out of Lindsay Air Station. Camp Pieri in those days looked only slightly similiar to what the posted flicks show. There was a local gasthous down the hill called "Mama's" It was referred to by some as the Twilight Command Post as we all had our own drinking glasses which was kept on premise until you shipped out. I shipped out to Ramstein Air Base January 1965.

This is Ron Ledford and I was stationed at Camp Pieri 563rd Ordnance Co. from November 1988 to September 1990. I had a back operation and the Army didn't like me after that. I was married at that time to Martha and she had my son Scott at the Weisbaden Army Hospital on 28th of July 1989 at 7:21 in the morning. After two back operations and a plane crash last year on 25th of February 2009, I could be doing better. The flight was TK-1951 from Turkey to Amsterdam on a Boeing 737-800. So after treating my body like a Carnival, I will soon be able to settle down in Amsterdam and live the good life. Smokin some good stuff, relaxin, and spending my days Chillin the Most! Thanks for the great blog...

I was stationed at Camp Pieri from November of 1970 through January 1972 in "C" battery 5th BN 77TH FA. It was a pretty good time. Although I was only an Spec-4, I was fortunate enough to have my wife and two oldest sons with me there. We lived "on the economy" in downtown Wiesbaden. The boys were only 20 months and 6 months old at the time, so they don't remember a thing about it, but I sure do. Somehow... we all survived the 70's...

I was a radio operator in First Constabulary Brigade Hq. stationed in Wiesbaden, '46-48. In 1947 we moved from the Henkel Trocken Winery to Camp Pieri. We shared the facility with an Air Force communication group. The barracks building I was assigned to had been damaged by artillery but was patched up with plywood. We were told that SS had used the barracks and our lockers, etc., were all standard SS issue.

I had a "medium speed" radio operator MOS. We sent and received messages via morse code to/from our regiments.(Call letters "one easy nan, two one jig, charley four niner..I'm surprised I remember!)

We were subject to occasional sniper fire and I had two near misses. One when I was walking a guard post behind the motor pool bldg.,another while on duty at our transmitter station located a mile or so up the hill, overlooking the Rhine. An Airforce sentry was shot at his post down in Wiesbaden.

I took Russian lessons from a Russian lady who was very shortly arrested as a spy. She asked us lots of questions about radio traffic, etc. Too bad, because I have since spent time in Ukraine where fluency in Russian would have been helpful.

Not long before I was to be returned to the ZI, the Soviets blockaded Berlin and we were dispersed to locations along the border with East Germany for a while, fearing forty divisions of Soviet armor would roll over us at any time. We didn't know it at the time, but General Bradly revealed in his biography that the JCS had formulated "Operation Halfmoon" which outlined a nuclear response to any westward movement by the Soviets. We beat the blockade, but entered into a "Cold War" that we have all participated in.
I visited Camp Pieri in 2004. Apparently at that time it was home to immigrants.

I have lots of pictures of the place made in '47-48.

I was stationed at the Wiesbaden Air Base when I arrived in Germany with the 527th MP Company. That was March of 1982. They moved the MP station to the front gate of the base, and then moved the HQ and 1st platoons to the 3rd floor of the first building to the left as you went through the gates of Camp Pieri. That was in April of 1982. We padlocked the doors on the far stairway..... It belonged to us. Why were MP's so hated.....lol....I left Germany in late Sept 1983. I worked a lot of hours but did enjoy my 18 months. I want to go back......the good old days.

I was stationed at Camp Pieri with 1st Constabulary Brigade from March 1946 - October 1948. In March 1946 General Harmon informed the troops stationed there that they were now Constabulary and what their duties would be. Came from Fort Knox as part of the 17th Mechanized Cav. Two and 1/2 years in Germany post WW II was a never to forget experience. Recalled as inactive reserve and spent Sep. 1950 - Oct. 1951 in Korea. A totally diferent experience. Still kicking.

When I arrived at the 563rd in June 1971 there was a group of us who ended up working in Depot Supply. John Lakes, Art Martell, Boyce Jaynes, and Myself. I'm getting to be an old fart so excuse me if I forgot someone. The CO was Douglas Catabaw (incorrect spelling). Captain Honey was also there. Later, Major Pope became the CO and Lt. White also arrived. I forget most of the NCO's except for Plt Sgt White who was referred to as Mad Dog. Some of the others I remember are Mark Rudder of S. Carolina, Fugikawa who arrived after a tour in the Nam, and Patton from Georgia who later went AWOL and never returned. If anyone remembers me please sent me an email at wpzimmer@gmail.com. If anyone knows the story of Edward Pimental please post it. I was there way before this happened but would like to know. During my time there I can't remember a single fight or any other violence in the 563rd. The idiots over a 5/77 had everyone walking Guard Duty almost every night. They were stupid enough to think they could beat the ARMY, but all they did was cause everyone there misery.

The project is about
1947-1950 Soldiers' Club;
1950-1973 Rod an Gun Club;
1974-1984 The United Pentecostal Church.

I was wondering if anybody had any memories or photos of the Soldiers' Club, the Rod and Gun Club or the Pentecostal Church.
If someone did it would be great to hear from you, because I would love to find out more, but it is almost impossible to find information about these time periods in the mansion here "on the hill"

Please email me for information and memories at gbv@schlossfreudenberg.de

I was with HQ 1/333 FA at Camp Pieri from August 78 to February 81. I was the first female assigned to 1/333 (wasn't as much fun as it may sound). I fondly remember 1LT Frank Mrak and SP5 'Pop' Dawes and Daniel Root (although he left shortly after I arrived). I had many friends at 563rd & 14 Maintenance (hey Tom Dylak).
I must say that I had the best of times during my stint at Camp Pieri !!!

Mark,i was on the hill from Jun.73 to Jan.75 great to hear from someone who was there when i was.I was in A btry upstairs from you on the third floor.wow what times we had there. What an experience for an 18 year old kid from Boston...Wasn't crazy about the Army, but loved Germany.I always go back in my mind to those days and the great people i met from all over the USA.Lucky i left there in one piece minus a few brain cells ha!ha!It's been awhile now and the mind is a bit hazy and i'll never remember eveyone right now but i ran with Jeff Imm,Charlie Pauser,Mark Percy,Roland campfield Joe Gnam,Reid Obacz etc....stumbled onto this website last year so glad i did...brought back so many memories...wouldn't mind being back there right now...I miss those days...talk to all of you again soon...stay well ...Rick Coe

Anonymous said...

Hi Rick Coe,
I don't remember you, but thanks for the reply. I do, however, recall Mark Percy going through Lance training with me at Sill--we arrived at Pieri together. Half of the Sill group went to Crailsheim and the rest of us arrived together at Pieri in late Aug. of 73. I went to C BTRY initially assigned to the survey platoon then eventually went to 1st Firing platoon for the rest of my time. A lot of my time there is kind of a hazy memory--I lost a lot of brain cells there too--but what else can be expected when you have a beer machine directly across the hall from your room door? I actually got a little depressed after reading the blogs on this site--It made me realize that I will never really be able to recapture that unique experience we had with the Lance and the(mostly) terrific people that I dealt with while I was there. I said for a long time that I would go back and visit the place, but it looks like that chance won't happen if only due to the fact that the place as we knew it doesn't really exist anymore. My one "haunting" disappointment is that while I took plenty of travel photos from all over europe, I didn't take the time to photograph hardly any of our daily routine, our post, or the people that were stationed there. I have managed to keep in touch with my platoon mates Bob Robbins (Byrdstown TN) and Rick Rhodes (Chino Hills CA), but the rest of those fine folks I knew are apparently lost forever. I guess after I retire maybe I can spend some time trying to track some of the guys down. Hopefully some other Pieri folks from "our time" will stumble across this site and reply. --All the best, Mark Kolodzie Sp4 C Btry 1/333 FA

Hello, I was at Camp Pieri, in HQ Btry, 1/333rd from 84-85. I worked in PAC as a 71L. My name is Teri Lyons. Unfortunately I was drunk most of my time there, and also married SP4 Frank Johnston, B Btry, 1/333rd. I remember so many great memories and loved Wiesbaden, Germany.

Hello, I was at Camp Pieri, from June 71-Jan. 73 A Battery,5th Bn. F.A. I worked in Supply Room for "A" Battery. It would be nice hear from anyone that was there during that time. With Veteran's Day coming up for some reason I thought of Camp Pieri, and just today found this site.

I was with the 5th Bn 77th Arty. We consolidated two battalions and moved to Camp Pieri in 1970. I started out in Darmstadt with the 3rd Bn 80th Arty. But so much for the Military, I had a great time there driving all the "Lifers" crazy. My kids love to hear the stories of some of the things we did there. 1970 was a lot different than the service today we were a grand mix of draftees and volunteers but with a bit of "independence" that did not serve the "RA's" well. I was in A Company and then later the buiding up front which might of been the headquarters company I don't really care which it was but I do know I ran into some really cool dudes and we had some very good times. I was a surveyor and actually made Sgt though God know why. I think the last 3 or 4 months I and 6 others ran the Gym. If anyone else was there around that time and you were part of the craziness let me know. Contact me at wilburized@aol.com

I was in the 563 Ord Co and worked on the FAAR Radar. My seargent was James Beard and Donald Riechert. Friends I can remember, Eric, Tom, TJ, Joe, Phil, Wayne Samples, Ron Nishibun (Tossed Salad)Old Joke, George Humphreys and many others I cant remember. German Girls I hung out with Ilona and Isabelle others I cant recall. Had good times and bad times. When new recruits would come in we would take them to Hiedi's and get them a rocktopuss around 180 proof, nasty stuff. I remember the parade field, PT, card games, loading up garbage cans with beer and ice on Fridays. The Palatz club was the place to hang out for GI's many a good times thier.

continued from previous, 1973-1976 at Camp Pieri. I remember terrorists shooting into the motor pool and the thought of going on guard duty with blanks. The base finally got a full size buss to go to town in and the driver (soldier waiting for discharge papers) was drunk and decided to cut through a farmers field, got stuck and an old german pulled us out with his tractor. I had a 50 dollar fiat which ran on three cylinders and would pick up other soldiers who lived off base. Barely make it up the hill. Everyone had to get out at the bottom when it dropped to two cylinders and then I would drive it the rest of the way. I bought a 68 Nova after that and when I would come back to the barracks after drinking in town we would have the front and back seat filled and even the trunk with guys who missed the last buss. Sometimes I remember waking up and the car was gone. I would ask one of the guys where it was and he said someone asked for the keys and you gave it to him, It showed up the next day. A lot of good times when I look back.

Hi Everybody, My name is Joe McCaffrey and I was at Capt Pieri near Wiesbaden from about April 1961 to Oct. 1962, about 18 months. I was a Sp4, with a MOS of Guided Missile Electronic Guidance System Maintenance and Repair for the Nike Missile, and was with the 579th Ordinance Battalion, We supported Nike Missile installations all over Germany. The war had ended only sixteen years before I got there, and there were signs of the war all over. Great memories. Our favorite drinking spot was in Wiesbaden on the Kaiser Bismark Ring Strasse which was also a hangout for a lot of Air Force guys. Wiesbaden was an Air Force town with the big air base there, and we in the Army were a minority. That was just fine with us.

I just retired fro a 28 year career as a newspaper reporter in Philadelphia and Newark, NJ. My email is joseph.d.mccaffrey@gmail.com
