Camp Pieri, Wiesbaden, Germany

My name is Jesse Morris, and I created this blog to find old Army buddies from Camp Pieri, in Wiesbaden, Germany. I was stationed at Camp Pieri in 1991 and 1992, with the 563rd Ordnance Company.

If you were at Camp Pieri at any time, please feel free to submit a comment. The same goes for anyone who was connected with Camp Pieri in any way.

Greetings All, my name is Jim Gilbert and I was at the 563rd as a 27B from Aug 81-Aug 84. By far, the best times of my military life were spent there. I still keep in contact with several folk from back then (Ernie Godoy, Alan Jenkins (Jinx), Rand Blaser, Buttermilk, Mike Polidori, Mike Hunt, Jim Federline and Bud Pagakis) and I still work with Mike Ledford. We need a 563rd gathering, would be great to see Top Evans, Ted Gerard, Alfred Max, and JB Barnes as well as many many others! Sure miss those Crete trips (seems I brought an English girl back to Germany every year and even married one!). Was stationed at Ft Bragg and Ft Sill before getting out in 1990 and met a few friendly 563rd faces at those stops. Feel free to contact me at : atlbluesman@comcast.net

Hi Jesse, thanks for the pictures. I was drafted into the army in October 1960, and after several army schools for electronics, was sent to Germany and Camp Pieri in April 1961. My company was the 579th Ordinance Battalion, and we serviced guided missiles, my MOS was electronic internal guidance repair. I was at Camp Pieri until Oct 1962, and it was possibly the greatest tour of duty any GI ever had. I returned to the states to finish my college at the University of Pennsylvania, and have just retired after a 30 year career as a journalist. I now live in Hollywood, Florida, and the pictures of Camp Pieri brought back a flood of great memories. Joseph D. McCaffrey joseph.d.mccaffrey@gmail.com

I was at Camp Pieri for only a few months in 1970-71. Never took any photos there, but sure would like to see some from that timeframe. Went to Vietnam after there. I was in charge of a 5-Ton wrecker, until someone "borrowed" it and drove it through the farmer's apple orchard.

I was at Camp Pieri 1962 to 1964. My unit was the 497th Reconnaisance Technical Squadron - a specialized intelligence Squadron which in 1967 was renamed an intel squadron or center. Our work compound was located in the town of Schierstein (am Rhein?) at the bottom of the mountain. I arrived and bunked at Lindsey during the Christmas holiday period 1961. Come spring or summer the generals at Lindsey moved us up to Camp Pieri - As I understand it, hiding us out of sight near the fence and back of the motor pool wasn't far enough from HQ. They wanted us off the station. Well, some of the guys used to get arrested (and released) and the generals had to notify our CO they were coming to our compound ahead of time. I heard there wasn't a make nice relationship there. From what i remember, after we got there the food in the chowhall improved via AF rations for a while until the Army supply guys and chief cook could find a German buyer for all the new goodies. The Wiesbaden Rod and Gun Club was across the road in a German villa - good dining at low prices. The shooting range was 1/4 mile east out of the camp. Mine was an M-2 carbine. As I recall, the Army guys had M-14s? Every weekday and Saturday morning there would be some Army sergeant yelling at the trans company falling out early in the morning and at first that didn't go over big with us getting our beauty-sleep - we could eat in our compound. We had partial separate rats. I got on a jag here - memories!!!!! Sorry about that. Peter K

Man some memories I was stationed there from 90-92 with 3/32 F.A. lance battalion. I helped with the decommisioning of the lance tracks. If anyone remembers I was ground guiding when my driver trainee ran over a hummer with a lance track. Boy was the capt. pissed. Anyway served my time and moved on to crewing apaches.

I am still in Germany. Was stationed at Camp Pieri with the USAF Security Service between 1950 - 1955. Our operation was located under the large antenna towers near the front road.

If anyone is interested, Camp Pieri is now a German Housing area but the character of the Base has not changed. To the best of my knowledge that large Eagle near the main gate is still in place.

I was stationed at Camp Peri from June 1951 until sometime in late 1952. There were two units at Camp Peri when I was there. Ours was the 25th Command Squadron Air Force under the command of USAFE. The other was an army Constabulary unit, and had about 50 to 60 men.My squadron had about 500 men including officers. There were two buildings housing our unit and the army unit. They were the two buildings on each side as you entered Camp Peri. There was also a mess hall and and several smaller buildings. In late 1952 our unit was transferred to Camp Lindsey, and in late 1953 we were transferred to a new facility in Kiserslauten Germany.

The building on the left as you entered Camp Pieri was occupied by my unit, the 497th Reconnaisance Technical Squadron from about spring of 1962 coming from Lindsey Air Station in Wiesbaden. I had heard it was actually an AF Camp or facility loaned to the Army. Nice view. Work compound was down the hill in Schierstein - we had a total of about 450 men at that time, most living on the econony or in family housing.

I was stationed at Camp Pieri from May 1962 through May 1966, with the 515 Ordnance Detachment (Hawk Missile Maintenance) which later became part of the 579th. Bunked in the first barracks building inside the main gate to the right (view of the beautiful Rhein River) and later in the one just above the shop area. Detachment Commander (Lt. Woodle?) briefed me on the first day about Communists in villages all around "the Hill", so I stayed on base the first month studying German. Later I was lured out into Wiesbaden by my roomates and began to enjoy the nightlife and German Culture. That summer I was introduced to Kleinfeldchen Schwimmbad (outdoor swimming pool) and that became a favorite haunt of mine during the warmer months. With regard to the 2/21/11 post by Miriam Peifer, I did visit Schloss Freudenberg (Rod and Gun Club) quite a lot. We dined there and played the slot machines. Our unit picnicked on the beautiful grounds. There were often people sunbathing in the surrounding meadows and it was a wonderful place to visit and recreate. I have some photos boxed up somewhere and will send or post them if I can locate. All in all I couldn't have asked for a better experience during my years of service. Lots of good friends and good times in a wonderful and beautiful part of the world.

I got there in 1962 and lived in the barracks on the left as you enter the camp. Our Squadron was the 497th Recon. Tech. Squ. We were kicked/moved off Lindsey Air Station after they hid us in the woods in back of the motorpool on Lindsey to the right after you enter the front gate. I guess it was good riddence as the squadron had some privileges and a higher incident rate. We had our own non-standard passes and fridges in the room with alcohol as long as it was locked. Bosch fridges had a lock in the handle.
We complained about the army chow at commanders call and it improved with AF rations, but started backsliding and it was discovered it was being sold to the Germans as their trucks seemed to easily come and go. Some Army cooks and supply were caught as I recall. We worked in the town at the bottom of the hill - Shierstein, the only GIs in the town - 450 men maybe more in the squadron - it was large - most lived on the economy or family housing.

I was in the 563rd Ordnance Company at Camp Pieri from February to July 1972. My stay was brief because of a mistake in my orders.

After 38 weeks of electronics repair training at Fort Monmouth, I was sent to Germany to work for TASCOM. First stop: the 21st Replacement Battalion at Gutleut Kaserne in downtown Frankfurt. The people there changed my orders from TASCOM (in Worms) to AWSCOM (in Pirmasens). Off I went to Pirmasens.

The AWSCOM people had no need for my critical MOS so they rolled their dice and assigned me to the 563rd Ordnance Company at Camp Pieri. I got to Camp Pieri via Huey helicopter (regular transit flight to Wiesbaden Air Base) and truck. It was obvious to the people in the 563rd that I had been mis-assigned, but they did the best they could to cope, making me a member of the Commo (communications) group.

I moved into a room on the second floor with Private Bill Dorr. From our room we could look north at the Camp's entrance street and guard station. For the first few days I painted rooms as part of a program to modernize the barracks. Then, by a fluke, I was made the unit mail clerk because the existing clerk (Sgt. Kelly?) wanted to offload it. So my time at Camp Pieri was spent processing mail for the 563rd. I did the daily mail call from a small room in the basement. That job exempted me from those awful 24-hour shifts of camp guard duty. Super!

Favorite activities of people in the barracks were listening to music, drinking (in the rooms or in bars), and talking about going back to "The World" (the States). Getting stoned was another pastime. Boring! I spent most of my free time off-post, bicycling with ex-Air-Force guys who lived in Wiesbaden.

I can recall the names of only four people at Camp Pieri: Major D. Brent Pope, the company commander (West Point graduate; starched uniform; cut his hair very short), Bill Dorr (my roommate), Paul Abel (we took a boat ride to Koblenz), and Arno Sattler (a German who gave German lessons on-post).

All this came to an end about five months after arriving at Camp Pieri. TASCOM---which needed my electronics training---tracked me down and in July had me re-assigned to its HQ in Worms. From there I was sent to a small satellite unit in Frankfurt that operated an electronics repair shop in the basement of the I. G. Farben Building. I finished my active duty in very nice conditions: working 9 to 5 Monday through Friday and living in a German apartment building leased to the Army for use as barracks. The work atmosphere was professional but relaxed: no formations, roll calls, inspections, guard duty, or other annoyances.

During my seven months in Frankfurt I met a German woman who quickly became my girlfriend. My active duty ended in March 1973. I returned to the States for two weeks, then flew one-way to Germany to live with that woman. We got married in Wiesbaden and later moved to the States. We're still together.

My time at Camp Pieri was a memorable part of my good Army experience. My e-mail: davebeedon@comcast.net.

My name is Arthur Brown, and I arrived at Camp Pieri late summer of 1969. I was a brand new 45 Bravo (Small Arms Specialist) assigned to Charley of the 19th (Maintenance Battalion, VCOSCOM). I knew this was gonna be a good duty station when the guys that picked me up from the Bahnhof detoured our deuce & a half to the Rod & Bottle Club just down the road from the front gate – where we spent the rest of the day – and many subsequent days.

C Company at that time (all 90 or so of us) was the only Army unit at Pieri (Pieri was an Air Force installation when I arrived) so we didn't do KP or Guard Duty, and the A.F. food was great. I was a 19 year old farm boy who had never been on a plane or out of the Midwest before – and this was the 60's – so I was living LARGE! That week the My Lai Massacre story broke – and the Manson Family went on their murderous rampage in California, and it was also the week that I found out what it was like to smoke hash; drop acid; and visit the 'Crazy Sexy'. I'm not sure that it's possible to understand those times if you weren't there.

We called Company C – "F Troop" because we lived all alone up there on Freudenberg Mountain, and as long as our workshops kept humming along performing the mission – haircuts and uniforms were (almost) optional. Until General Hunter noticed.

The Air Force pulled out that winter – leaving Charley Company to maintain the entire Post. I ended up being Sgt. of the Guard, and a hard stripe Corporal (the only one in Germany at the time) – until an MP unit, and the 5th of the 77th Pershing II guys moved in.

The Air Force had left the plumbing, heating, and electrical in miserable shape, and there was extensive fire damage, but from General Hunter on down – nobody seemed to care about the plight of the enlisted men. So we formed a steering committee (2 elected representatives from each Company – I was proud to be one) as a last resort, and planned a strike.

Sounds dangerous for military men – who can face a firing squad for such things, but those were crazy times, and I still wasn't old enough to vote. It was planned out and coordinated with the local and National German Press, who along with American correspondents would be there at 6:30 AM on the designated day – cameras rolling, as they filmed the unlivable conditions and interviewed soldiers who refused to go to work – but only because nothing else had gotten anybody's attention for almost a year.

By the time General Hunter's helicopter set down on the Parade Field that day, Camp Pieri was crowded with local citizens, politicians, and journalists. (Earlier the local citizenry had taken an interest when American Soldiers in civilian clothing were disciplined for marching in anti-war demonstrations.

The General was outraged – yes OUTRAGED that such conditions could exist on an American Army base. He promised to launch an investigation, fix the lousy conditions and not have anyone arrested – if we would just go to work. We did.

'Strike at Camp Pieri' made the front page of The Stars and Stripes, and was the lead story on the NBC Nightly News that night – and nobody got shot.

Hello All,
My name is Charles Johnson. My father was at Pieri from 84/85'-1987. I believe he was a Sgt at this time. His name is Keith Johnson & although I am not really sure what his duties or heck even his Comapnies duties were over there. I do know 2things... One, he was an MP & Two, some of my best childhood memories are of living in the Crestview Housing Area (Pluto Weg), going to Hainerburg Elementary, mayo on Poma Fritz& the great foods in general, espescially HARIBO Gummies, which I still LOVE to this day! Anyways, TY for the Nostalgia. It is one of my dreams to return to Weisbaden with my wife&daughter to show them a Treasured piece of my childhood. To tell them about Volks Marches, Heidelberg Castle & the Opel Zoo! If anyone knew my father Sgt. Keith A. Johnson, feel free to email me&perhaps give me some insight (Good or Bad), If his Soldiering was Anything like his Parenting, then im sure his Hard Ass left an impression on someone in West Germany in the mid eighties! I thank you for your time. Sincerely Charles Johnson. Charlieblaze36@yahoo.com

I was stationed at Camp Pieri with the 563rd '74-'76 and remember most of it very fondly. I was a 94B20(cook) with a crazy schedule but it was a great post in a great city! A group of us would hang out in the pear orchard across the street and made many walks to the winery! It's kind of sad it's changed so much from the small post to the sprawl it seems to be today. Thanks for the memories.

I remember 1SG Calloway, Captain Lovell, Lt. John Chapelle, SFC Ward, SGT, Bradshaw SSG Rodriguez, and SPC Leon Brown. Can't forget running up to Rheinblick Range, and back for PT.I remember a guy jumping out a window, and committing suicide over a average looking blonde soldier! Hello Everyone!
My 2nd tour of duty in West Germany began at Camp Pieri from April 1980 until December 1983 with the 14th Maintenance Company. I was a SPC4 52D in the 3rd Shop with SFC Johnson as the S&E Platoon Sergeant, and SSG Byron Cox as the S&E Section NCOIC. I remember a TALL 1SG Wilbur, and a very slender CPT Fast. Because I of my clerical skills, I spent most of my tour working at the Shop Office, the Orderly Room and the Training Room. I remember several Change of Commands by units stationed there on the parade field. Even one where the 14th had a platoon perform close drill movements with rifles. Glad I captured that on film then. PT in the mornings usually involved the run through the vineyard across from the main gate or sometimes up to the golf course and back. I preferred the vineyard runs as they weren't so UP hill like the golf course runs. I went to the movies a lot on Camp Pieri. Not so much to the bowling alley or Hilltop Club. Did plenty of exploring of Wiesbaden, and the surrounding area after I bought a red 1972 Fiat 128 4dr sedan. Even found a spot in the Taunus mountain range that became my weekend get-a-way. Somewhere around the spring of 1982, I was permitted to plant rose bushes, and other assorted flowers and shrubs along the front side of the barracks. They did well in 1982 and 1983 so much so that some of the gals asked if they could cut some roses for their room. Pulling guard duty was a rare occasion. After I was promoted to SSG, I got married, brought the family over and we lived off post in Hettenhain, a small town about 10Km from post. Enjoyed the drive back and forth. My wife worked at the Hainerberg shopping center for AAFES and did well. Plenty of fond memories with just a few spoilers between. Look forward to some day returning, sit on a bench in the vineyard, sipping on a bottle of local wine, and remember those times, good people and Germany.

Hi, my name is William Osborn Jr. I was at Camp Pieri from June 1981-January 1985. I was assigned to Bravo Battery 1/333 FA. (Lance) Since it has been over 30 years ago, my memory isn't as keen as it was back then. What I do remember more in those days was my bad temper, all my suspended busts, and all those drunken nights. I never drank with Soldiers but preferred German bars where I could practice the language. I had names like "Wild Bill," Ozzie, and later Sgt. "O" I remember LT. Chapelle, LT. Lennon, LT. Handshaw, LT. Deghan. SFC. Ward, SSG. Monaco, Sgt. Jerome Tisdale, Cpt. Lovell, Cpt. Jenes. I really enjoyed playing German/American Football, when we weren't in the field, which was about every other week! lol. I married a German girl, but divorced soon after. I married three more times until I found the right woman, whom I met after my military career. I spent a total of 22 years active, and reserve retiring in 1998. I am currently living in Tennessee, and working for the U.S. Postal Service in Nashville, Tn. My wife, and I will be vacationing to Germany in August of this year. Two stopping points will be Saarbrucken, and Wiesbaden. I have many memories of Camp Pieri, most of them good. If anyone wishes to contact this 61 year old, my e-mail is wm187aaslt@hotmail.com PS. Can't forget SP5 Fred Kahle, SSG. Paul Rodriguez, Sgt. James Jennings, SP4 Leon Brown, and the rest of our Commo Shop! Sgt. (Ret.) William M. Osborn Jr.

Dave C. Another survivor of Camp Pieri. Served 12/76-12/77 in 563rd Ord co. I have to say, I was a complete pain the azz while I was there. My first week, I came down with some kind of infection and had to go to the hospital for extraction of all 4 wisdom teeth. Maj Pope wasn't pleased about it, and our 1st sgt tried to get me transferred out. Only problem was, the Calibration section needed one 35H lead along with the 35B instrument techs, and I was the only 35H around! Our fearless leader was one of the only Spec9 in the Army. Spec Illichmann, he was tall, skinny and spoke pretty good German, so he got involved in camp business from time to time. Very nice guy, and I made his life pretty bad.

If that wasn't enough, I started a small race riot later that year when I was dating a skinny black co clerk. The co Armor and a few others didn't much care for that with me being blond, and green eyes. So - they trashed my NSU Prinz. I woke up on the night, and stuck my head out and banged on the window, then snapped a pic when they looked up with my Instamatic 110 camera. Poor quality, but easy to identify them.

Later that summer we had a travel crew of other calibrators come by to do our transfer standards, and I found out half of their standards were out of cal date! Another fire storm! lol. I was also the mean guard NCO who brooked no challenges to the supernumary selection. WTF does it mean when I make a selection and that is that? End of story. Lastly, before I left in Dec The locals got mad at us for so many wrecks coming off that hill. We had a snow/ice storm and there were about 15 guys that piled up cars down that hill to the south. What a mess, but at least that wasn't my fault. Weird place, glad I served, but really don't want to go back.

Michael Polidori, 563rd Ordnance Company.

I decided to tell some stories.
I don't have many left in my brain, but seeing Kevin Huff's comment made me think I should post something more.

Hi Kevin, I remember you too. When did I refuse to go to PLDC? I remember a push for every NCO to attend every leadership school, no matter his rank.
I do remember attending a new leadership school with a female commandant (Wurzburg I think) and getting chewed out for fixing washing machines and dryers (We had only two washers and one dryer for two platoons of pissedoff-mostly-NCOs).
I brought a tool kit everywhere I went, including all of my training schools.

When I first arrived at Camp Pieri's 563rd Ordance Company in August 1976 I was greeted by SFC Fisher, who was exactly the type of NCO I was expecting.
I was standing at Parade Rest for every NCO that passed me by. Fisher gave me a growling going-over and then I went to the Land Combat Platoon to report to my boss Sp6 Blosser.

When I met him he stuck out his hand while telling I didn't need to stand at parade rest (Laughing, "We don't do that here.").
While shaking my hand he introduced himself as "Ken"... everyone was on a first name basis in the platoon.
I was reeling as a year of Army Discipline and 20 years of watching John Wayne WWII movies started to unravel in my head.

I remember one of my first work experiences with a country-boy-specialist named Shannon.
He and his buddy (Nix, I think) were talking to me about a work stoppage we were having to change the mind of the leadership about taking any of the LCSS test stations out to "the field".

WOW!! That memory is still fresh.

I was also told about a Narc that was thrown from the third story of the barracks while inside a wall locker.
I wasn't into partying, carousing, chasing women, drugs or drinking. Hell, I didn't even swear!
I was bunking with Doug Glenn, who I went to school with at Redstone Arsenal.
One night he came into the room telling me how he had just saved my ass.
Because I was such a goody-two-shoes, it had been decided that I must be another Narc. There was a discussion about giving me a ride in a wall-locker, but Doug explained that he knew me from school at Redstone, I had a wife and a kid, and didn't party, drink, cuss or carouse in the seven months at school.

Good times and the possibility of special carnival rides!

Can not remember the two yahoos I was with when we skipped out on the czech trip and got busted smoking hash in the shooting range parking lot by the Major.

Sneaking beer into the movie theater.

Running down to the carambolage pool bar, busing or taxiing back.

Kutschers Alt.

Imbiss stands, curry wurst.

The gasthouse just to the left of the main gate when leaving.

Hilltop tavern where $20 got you hammered.

The boot wire, where you tossed your boots the night before leaving.

The Boot, and us running him into the ground.

No cadences through the nieghborhood.

Running up and down the vineyards.

Fasching in Maintz.

Volksmarches on Fridays for PT.

The local carnivals,

The big carnival in Maintz where some idiot, me, jumped into the Rhine off the wall for 50 marks.

Running my track into a house, banged up beyond belief and LTC Yarger bringing me back to the field to pull guard duty.

mud, mud, mud and more mud.

Hania and the idiot cab rides.

Going to Hanau and seeing where the special weapons were stored.

The idiot who got his extra long wheelbased 5 ton stuck in the ditch by the railrod track, germans love to have their trains delayed.

our few air mobile missions.

Strac soldiers in the firing platoons, the us mangy mutts in A&T.

Camoflage netting, getting caught up in it all the time.

Moving to new sites, moving, always moving,

The time the spare M60 barrel was lost and we policed up our sites forever, it was never found.

Walking up to the firing site in Grafenwoehr in the snow because the trucks could not go up, getting there and freezing not getting to fire because the ambulance could not make it up either, walking back down. Getting back in the trucks only to be removed and having to walk back up, because we did not do a weapons check at the top.... walking back down in deep snow. fun, yes fun it was.

Those WERE the good old days.

Triple threat, 1/333 best in the world when LTC Yarger was in charge. Lots of dislike, but he was the man.

So much to catch up on! A few highlights: Brenda and I finally split in 2007, about 20 years later than we should have. I got remarried this past July. Finally got my degree (2000 & Master in 2003) comma move to Florida, and started teaching. Got laid off in 2008, and I've been playing music full time since then.
Would love to catch up with you guys sometime. My email is shipwreckf@aol.com

My name is Bill Elliott and I was stationed at Camp Pieri from early August 1966 until early August 1969. I was with Det. 2, 6910 Security Wing of the United States Air Force Security Service. I played for the Wiesbaden Flyers football team in 1966 and 1967 and then quit the team because I was not getting my fair share of TDY assignments. I think that Wiesbaden was a plum assignment because of its location in Western Europe which gave us ample opportunities for travel during our time off with 3-day passes and leave. The food was good in the chow hall and we were close to good restaurants and bars - Mama's right outside the gate and the Forsthaus Rheinblick up the street. We were also close to the Rod and Gun Club and the golf course. I always look back with fond memories of my time at Camp Pieri and the friends I made in Det. 2.

From Nick V. 12/09/69-02/72 the 563rd moved from Red stone Arsenal to Mainz first, then to Camp Pieri. The battalion building was ours for a month or so and since our CO was a second louie they kicked us across the street to the smaller building. Coming from Texas, boy it was as cold that first year then I have ever experienced. I had never heard of steam pipes, boy what a great 28 months.

Well I guess I'm the old dude. I've posted comments about Camp Pieri on other sites, but here goes. I arrived there in January of 63,from GrossAuheim because of a mishap in assignments. Long story,no time.. I was in Headquaters Plattoon first, then the Nike Platoon(former 227th Ord Det.) SFC Shelton, aka Railhead, was was platoon sgt. My room was 305,and we faced the 497th RTS of the USAF. Later SSG Ralph N. Angelo Came aboard, and we didn't have any use for each other. Before I left CP though, I realized than Angelo loved ONLY four things:His country, His men,the Army, and his 65 Chrysler 300, a big white beauty. I ended up respecting him more than any other man in the Army, except my best buddy Robert C. Meade from Seattle,WA. My room mates were Jerome J. Swayne, from Milwaukee WI,Norman S. Yamamoto from Captain Cook, Kona,Hawaii, and Martin Navor Jr. from Honolulu,Hawaii. Marty re-upped for six,and a few days later his father was killed in bar altercation. Marty was sent home on a compassionate re-assignment to take care of his Mom.I miss all those guys so much! Hopefully they all had happy, long, lives and are still with us. Especially SSGT Angelo. Rest in Peace, men, you are remembered with love and affection. I left Wiesbaden in March '66. SP5 Allen R. Hedge,RA15676987,Nike Plt,579th Ord Co GMGS. Also, the 14th was known as the 14th Ord Co(GS) in those days.

Hi Sean O'B here, was stationed at Camp Pieri from late '73 to '75 as an MP. Our barracks were above the 14th Maintenance. I literally just got off the phone with a friend who was in the 14th. His name was Charlie B. His nickname was Space Ghost, he was best buds with another guy named "Bee". I saw your post Bee so hello! So, Charlie and I were reminiscing about Pieri. We both remembered another MP who loved ManDrax or Mad Dogs. He would get stoned and for whatever reason strip down. I personally watched him walk into one of the rooms one night that we were hanging out in on the third floor when he climbed up to the window. I thought he was just going to take a piss off the ledge, next thing i knew he was gone! He landed on a car roof in the quadrangle. Of course I thought he was dead, but he got up and walked back into building. I myself can personally swear under oath that he did that twice. Charlie said it was four times. On one occasion, he camped out in the Arms room. He had the keys because he was the CQ! Lol. I remember seeing him one morning after one of his flights; he was so sore and stiff , he could barely walk, not to mention that he was black and blue head to toe.I had asked Charlie if he remembered the boot tree. Then Charlie mentioned this site to me. Sure enough someone here did. Thanks, left a pair of my boots there in '75. Think i painted them first, one blue, one red. Thank you Jesse for getting it started. Mike Duturow, I think remember you even though we were in different units. As an MP, we had use of the jeeps, (not necessarily authorized). So we spent a lot of time, exploring the countryside, not to mention eating at Lindsey Air Station, especially on Sundays. The Fly boys lived large and ate well. A local friend of mine, said that when he thought about which service to join, the recruiter told him that the Air Force was the only outfit that sent out the officers to get shot at while the enlisted men stayed behind. Naturally, he joined the Air Force.
The mention of the field across from Pieri's front gate made me smile. One Saturday afternoon, after a solo MP patrol in Mainz, I ran into some of the guys as I was driving back onto Pieri. They jumped in and we decided to go for a ride in that field before heading down to Lindsey to eat. Well, I decided to try a Hand Brake turn. We rolled over in a cloud of dirt, radiator steam and oil. Luckily none of us got hurt. We pushed the jeep back up and sputtered back onto Pieri. The gate guard was laughing. At the Motor Pool, we cleaned it up as best we could. I signed the keys back in, and then told a friendly CQ not to let that thing go out for the remainder of the weekend. I remember the Motor Pool Sergeant having a fit Monday afternoon. Of course, I swore innocence and that it was fine when I had returned it. Needless to say, I received extra attention from the Non coms. Probably that wasn't the only reason I did.
I have a much fonder memory of that field; one morning, myself and a great woman were enjoying life after a nightnout when some unit came jogging by for their PT run. We laughed and stayed still until they passed. She said she just hoped somebody didn't mistake her bare butt for a rabbit and start shooting. Put her in a cab at the gate, and strolled back onto Pieri with as much strut as a young man could muster.
Besides Space Ghost and Bee, I remember great times with Mike White, George Celsor, Bill " Deputy Sheriff" Hendricks and especially James "Pappy" Daniels. Thanks everyone for the memories. Sean O'B seanob7476@gmail.com

I don't know why so many don't include there name. My name is Stephen Johnson I served at Camp Pieri from 1973 to 1976. It was a hell hole back then . Drugs were rampant and there was big wall between blacks and whites. That being said I cant think of a more scary time in my life but also a more satisfying time either. I remember a black sergeant that had recently come back from Vietnam and became friends with him. This guy had lettuce all aver his uniform, two tours in Vietnam with two purple hearts. One day he was beating the crap out of three black guys and telling them to straighten up and understand that Americans better stand together white or black. They didn't stand a chance, I understood that this man had seen war.

It was interesting times and i was indoctrinated into how life worked. I went over in a 3 month time with over 200 other recruits. When i left 3 years later maybe 20 of us left. Drugs, suicide, murder and article 13's pretty much took care of the problem. A whole MP group was arrested for being the primary drug distributors. It was scary. But beyond that what great friends I made, Philip Walsh, Big will, Lenny graves, kent Mcelvy, royce brooks, TJ, fred fox, Tim Nash, Joe, eric, Glenn hyde and so many others. My girlfriends Illona and Isabella and many other german women who I was so rude too. Except my apologies. But all in all I love my memories. I am know retired from the Laser and microwave com engineering world. I am actually in excellant shape at 66. People say I look 50 and I believe them of course. Still 34 inch waste and muscles are still there. Take lots of vitamins and herbs. Anyhow to all my Camp Pieri brothers and sisters. God Bless and live a long and happy life.

I was stationed at Camp Pieri from July of '71 'till February of '73 with the 545th MP Plt. We spent most of our time on the Mainz side of the river where the MP Station was located in Dragooner Kaserne. The last year I split time between Desk Sergeant and Patrol Supervisor. I have a lot of great memories of Fasching, the WeinMarkt, waiting for the American girls to get off the Rhein Tour boats. While I was living in Europe in the late '90's I went back up to Camp Pieri which had been converted to apartments for the Germans and took a couple of photos . A lot nicer than the burned out third floor I moved into in July of '71. A lot of fond memories of those years.

I also know that he was African American. I did a google search on this accident, but nothing turned up. CAN ANYONE HELP ME??
I am a paralegal helping a gentleman with his VA case. He was at Camp Pieri. he believes it happened in 88 or 89, he's thinking around September or when it was a little cooler outside. there was a man working on an antenna or radio tower of some sort when it snapped and impaled the gentleman in the eye, killing him. Such a tragic story and my heart goes out to his family. My client was there when it happened and it has caused pretty severe PTSD in his life so myself and the rest of my legal team are doing anything we can to move his case forward. anyone that remembers anything can provide a buddy statement that will strengthen his case. I do have the name of the gentleman who died but don't want to leave it here out of sensitivity. please feel free to email me at ashley.ewing@tabakattorneys.com with any and all information you can think of. I know this is an old blog post but hoping someone out there can recall anything!! Thank you guys for listening!!!
